On December 11, 1942, Geissinger joined the Army Air Corps in Erie, Pennsylvania and served in World War II as an Air Traffic Controller. He conducted his training for WWII in various locations throughout the United Kingdom. During the Berlin Airlift (June 24, 1948-May 12, 1949), Geissinger helped operate various radar sites and lined up landing planes. He spent some time in the Philippines during the war and stayed in The Hague, Netherlands afterwards.
While in Germany, he owned a Mercedes that he loved and adored. This was also when he earned the nickname Gus from his friends and picked up a habit for smoking as it alleviated hunger and rid of bugs. |
